Decisions are based on what you already know, not on what you could someday know. Today we can find anything online so why bother to learn and memorised something if it is one click away? This is a question I am often asked and this is a question I also asked when I was younger because I didn’t see any value in school (studies shows that 3 yrs after graduation we remember only 3 weeks value of courses).
Firstly, reaction time. When you make a decision you have to take a lot of things into consideration and usually you make over 4000 per day. If you would search online for information for every decision and its consequences or at least for the important ones, you have to learn from at least 3 good sources to learn from, that usually means going to 10 or more, that is a lot of time waster every time.
Secondly, new approaches. If you do not have knowledge in your head you cannot have good ideas that could make baby ideas and come with something new or innovative. In order to make a baby you need two person close together, is not very usefull if they are 4000km aways and communicating slowly via email. We want to be with smart people that can solve problems, not spend our time with human copying machines.
Choose one thing and become a master of it. Choose a second thing and become a master of that.
When you become a master of two worlds (say, engineering and business), you can bring them together in a way that will a) introduce hot ideas to each other, so they can have idea sex and make idea babies that no one has seen before and b) create a competitive advantage because you can move between worlds, speak both languages, connect the tribes, mash the elements to spark fresh creative insight until you wake up with the epiphany that changes your life. – Justine Musk
Third, update and upgrade the mind. We can do that by learning everyday from books, movies, offline or online courses, friends, asking questions, understanding why and how, looking for paterns, thinking about the future, knowing the past and living the present. No one want to work or live with a Windows 95 or XP with a lot of security flaws and blue screen of death.
The more you know, the more you dare and the chances to succeed increases. I was lucky enough to be parts of 4 interdisciplinary teams between 2010 and 2018. On average we had 10 departments and 40 people working together. This is how I learnt communication and PR, civil and mechanical engineering, architecture and interior design, leadership and management. The more you know, the more curious you become in finding new and better ways to do things or even to create new products, services and opportunities.
Try to meet poeple not like you, but different. The purpose is to have an heterogenic team acting homogeneous, run away from bubbles, from echo chambers. Confirming what you already know is both inefficient and dangerous. Search for the people to challenge you and for the ones that are right when you are wrong.
Bombard yourself with experiences and information. This will create a shield that will protect you and will develop your super powers. But it is good to know that opportunities are not chasing you and they are not everywhere. It is your responsibility to search and hunt for them and train for the moment they will arise, to be prepared and rise up to the challenge when then moment will come.
