Automation, Digitalisation and AI will lift productivity and economic growth, but millions of people worldwide may need to switch occupations or upgrade skills. In the next 25 years around 47% of today’s jobs will disappear according to Oxford, anything that is routine or repetitive will be automated. Furthermore Dell tells us that 85% of jobs that will exist in 2030 haven’t been invented yet.
We have to change the way we understand and teach education. Being a bookshelf of information is not enough anymore, computers are having a larger and faster memory that does not degrade over time. Today education should focus on creating skills as independent thinking, creativity and team work, on understanding of feelings, empathy will become ever more valuable in a world where the torrent of technology will disrupt the status quo like never before. We should focus on creating virtuous and wise beings, to upgrade and improve, to learn, unlearn and relearn.
The main challenge is tackling inertia – change’s biggest enemy. If education is the fuel for research and development and big questions, curiosity is the spark we have to ignite in order to create change. Only better people could create a better world and bring more progress, peace and well-being to others. We have to focus on creating value, not just consuming it.
Knowing and understanding are two different things and we have to focus on understanding. For that we need patience and practice, team work and an interdisciplinary approach. We have to start blending again the technical sciences, humanistic and arts, expression of the curiosity and creativity of humanity. Education is everyone’s own responsibility, we have the means, the info and the tools to learn anything, we only have to want and to act.
Now is the time for mass adoption and learning of meditation, transcendence and flow. Being completely involved in an activity for its own sake determines high levels of concentration and focus. The ego falls away. Time flies. Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one. It is productivity, innovation and happiness combined.
